A view of a reservoir

Like with most of our wild camps, we plan a spot based on nearby munros and this was based around Ben Lawers and Beinn Ghlas.

To find it I started zooming in on the areas surrounding the munros and spotted the reservoir so took a closer look. There seemed to be a few spaces great for campers, but not much with open space for a tent.

Then, I looked a little closer to the reservoir dam itself and saw what looked like a parking bay with grass – perfect!

When we arrived it was better than I thought – what looked like a parking bay was actually a turning off the road and down onto a lower track with 2 levels. Unfortunately the weekend we went was a rather soggy one so the lower level was a wee bit too damp to pitch the tent, but there was space on the upper grass level for us! If you do get a dry weekend then this lower section is a perfect pitch, lots of tent room and the only thing in front of you will be the reservoir!

I started pitching the tent while Stephen took the boys for a swim in the lochan and then we set up for an evening bbq! There was a slight wind (which kept the midges away wahoo!) coming from the direction of the dam so we parked the car on that side to give us and the boys a little shelter.

During dinner we had a visitor – a sheep! She wandered over on the far side of the parking track, had a nosey at our set-up then continued on. The boys were quite tired from the 4 munros we had climbed earlier that day so they barely noticed!

After dinner we got a fire going to toast some marshmallows then chilled out with the boys to admire the view and watch the sun set behind the hills on the far side of the Lochan. Then, it was off to bed to get a good night sleep before tackling the munros in the morning.
