Snacks

A staple of every hike - snack time!

Both at home and away we have 2 go-to's for dog snacks: Peanut butter and soft bites

The legal bit - just to disclose that this post mentions 2 brands that we are proud ambassadors of: Nuts for Pets and Forthglade so [ad-ambassadors]. If you fancy shopping with them, you can save with the code 'Spaniels10' at Nuts for Pets and 'Hugo20' at Forthglade.

Now thats done, I can tell you about the goodies!

Just like us, dogs need to take in calories and keep fueled when out on hikes so packing some good snacks on your trips is a must. We like to keep snacks that last a while (not going to go off if we forget about them at the bottom of the bag for a week or two!) and fit in with their usual diet.

First up is one I like to tuck into myself - peanut butter 🥜

In just the past year and a half, we have eaten our way through over 4 kgs of Nuts for Pets and if i'm being totally honest, at least half of it has been eaten by me. I LOVE it. Its all natural with no sugar, palm oil, salt or xylitol - just peanuts and a wee bit of scottish honey!

For Spencer especially, this is what we call a 'jackpot treat'. This is a treat SO good he would do anything for it. When you're teaching recall, you'll want to have jackpot treats with you to use as rewards and this has been our go-to with him! We normally buy 'The Big One' (one whole kilo of nutty goodness) but have also tried their new Gold One (with turmeric) which is actually pretty yummy too!

Next is Hugo's jackpot treats - fishy soft bites from Forthglade

Both he and Spencer will demolish anything from Forthglade, but the fishy soft bite treats are definitely their favourites. We usually buy the Salmon soft bites but as a treat will get them the National Trust Salmon and Herring which they go mad for!

With a waterproof packet, these are perfect to chuck into a hiking bag even on a rainy day. I like to fold the packet in half and slot it into the front of my camelbak for easy access. We'll typically go through 1 packet of treats on a day's hike (sharing them between the boys) to keep them fulled.
